Some days we barely have time for a cup of tea, let alone a trip to the gym. That is exactly why we love this 10 minute walking workout. It is fast, it is fun, and it gets our heart rate up right at home.
There is no equipment, no jumping and nothing complicated to learn. We simply walk, reach, twist and tap our way through ten feel-good moves set to music. Each move was chosen to lift your heart rate while switching on your deep tummy muscles. So while we are walking it out, our core is quietly doing its share of the work too.
You can follow along with Schellea on the Fabulous50s YouTube channel, or simply read through each move below first. Let’s get started.
Why a Walking Workout Works So Well After 50
Many of us notice our weight settling around the middle after menopause. Shifting hormones change where fat is stored, even when our eating has barely changed. It can feel frustrating, especially when the scale refuses to budge.
The lovely thing about regular movement is that it works on the fat we cannot see. Aerobic exercise helps reduce visceral fat, the deeper belly fat that wraps around our organs. A large review of 117 studies found exercise lowered visceral fat by about 6%, even without any weight loss. Another review found moderate to higher intensity aerobic training had the strongest effect on this deep fat.
In plain words, our waistline and our health can improve before the numbers on the scale do. That is why a walking workout for weight loss over 50 is such a smart place to start. It is gentle on the joints and fits into a busy morning. It also builds confidence one session at a time.
We also want to be honest with you. Fat cannot be melted from one spot by working that spot alone. What we can do is pair heart-pumping cardio with core work. That way we burn energy and strengthen the muscles underneath at the same time. This routine was built exactly that way.
Ten Minutes Really Does Count
The World Health Organization recommends 150 to 300 minutes of moderate activity each week. It is also clear that every bit of movement counts. Ten minutes a day is a wonderful starting point. It also sits at the heart of the Fabulous50s Longevity Protocol. There, daily movement builds the foundation for everything else.

Before We Begin
Clear a little space, pop on some supportive shoes and keep a glass of water nearby. Take every move at your own pace. Slow down whenever you need to, and challenge yourself a little when you feel ready.
Throughout the workout, keep your core gently held in and your head high. Keep walking on the spot between moves to keep your heart rate up. Each move runs for about a minute, which makes this low-impact cardio for women over 50 easy to follow.
The 10 Minute Walking Workout, Move by Move

1. Cross Body Lateral Twist
We begin with gentle arm swings to warm the body. Swing your arms across your body as you walk, and let your waist twist naturally with each step. Hold your core in tight and keep your head high. This wakes up the shoulders, spine and waist before we build the pace.
2. High Knee Taps
Hold your hands out at waist height. Now use your abdominal muscles to lift each knee as high as your hands. This is where your heart rate starts to climb. If you need an easier version, simply lower your hands a little and keep marching.
3. Cross Body Sky Reach
Stretch through your side abs and reach for the sky, crossing each arm diagonally overhead as you step. This is exactly what your body was designed to do. So put a smile on your face and thank your body for the gift of movement.
4. Standing Elbow to Knee Crunch
Engage your core and bring your left knee toward your right elbow, then alternate sides. Crunch into the knee and let your abdominal muscles do the lifting, rather than momentum. It is one of our favorite standing core exercises. It is kind to the back and needs no floor work.
5. Step Out Star Jumps
This move looks easy, and it is fun, but it asks a lot of our deep abdominal muscles. Step one foot out to the side as you reach both arms up and out, then return to center. There is no jumping at all. Your core keeps the body stable and upright as you reach and tap.
6. Cross Body Toe Taps
Take your arms out wide and hold your core in tight. Reach down towards the opposite toe, keeping your back long and leading with your chest. This stops the back from rounding. You will feel your lower tummy muscles working to bring you back up to center. Bend your knees as much as feels comfortable.
7. Forward to Side Step Out, Right Foot
Engage your core, stabilize on your right leg and tap your left foot to the side, center, front, then center. You will feel this mostly in your standing leg. We are working our balance, legs and core all at once. Rest a hand lightly on a chair if your balance needs some support.
8. Forward to Side Step Out, Left Foot
Now we change sides. Stand on your left leg and tap your right foot to the side, center, and front, then center. Notice whether one side feels steadier than the other. That is useful information, and it usually evens out with regular practice.

9. Arm Swings
Next, we open our chest and lift our arms while we continue walking. By its very nature, this movement is a natural energy booster. It leaves us feeling good for the rest of the day. After all, feeling good in our bodies is what we really want.
10. The Twist
This last move takes us home. Twist gently at the waist and let your arms swing from side to side as you keep stepping. You have this body and this movement, so use them to be in the moment. Appreciate yourself, then smile, because you are amazing.
How to Get More From Your Walking Workout
When the workout is complete, take a moment to notice how you feel. Are you a little out of breath? Write it down, because that feeling is your heart and lungs getting stronger. Over a few weeks, you will notice how quickly your energy lifts from the start to the end.
Still have more in you? Pair this session with a standing abs workout to complement what we just did. On busier days, one 10-minute walking workout is still a real win worth celebrating.
As you grow stronger, there are simple ways to progress. Lift your knees a little higher, reach a little further and pick up your walking pace. Small changes like these keep the 10-minute walking workout challenging without adding any impact on the joints.
Movement works best alongside nourishing food, good sleep and kindness towards ourselves. None of it needs to be perfect. At this stage of life, consistency is more important than intensity.
