Some stories remind us why staying strong and healthy is about so much more than fitting into a dress size or chasing after confidence in the mirror. Fitness after 50 can literally be life-saving, not just for ourselves, but for the people we love most.
This is the story of Debra Matthews, one of our cherished Fabulous50s community members, and her granddaughter Phoebe.
In 2021, Debra shared her journey with us, and it quickly became one of the most powerful testimonies we’ve ever received. Schellea even spoke about it in one of her Christmas fitness videos, asking the community to send love and energy to Debra and Phoebe.
What began as simple home workouts became a journey of resilience, love, and a reminder of why fitness at any age, especially after 50, can change everything.
From Couch Potato to Weight Loss Success at 56
When Debra first found Fabulous50s, she wanted to feel healthier and more active. Like many women over 50, she had slipped into a sedentary lifestyle and described herself as a “couch potato.” But the moment she began her workouts, everything started to change.
“About a year ago, I found fabulous 50’s and started the workouts. Two or three times a week soon turned into every day, I loved it. My body turned from a couch potato to the best my body has ever been. (by the way did I mention I’m 56).”
Her commitment led to more than just weight loss. She gained strength, stamina, and confidence. The low-impact but effective Fabulous50s workouts helped her transform her body at home, proving that fitness after 50 is possible, sustainable, and life-changing.
A Grandmother’s Gift of Life
Then came the moment that would test everything. Debra’s granddaughter Phoebe, just 10 months old at the time, needed a liver transplant. She had already undergone one transplant, but tragically, it hadn’t worked. Doctors said she only had days left to live.
Debra wrote to us with heartbreaking honesty:
“Then three weeks ago I had to stop! My granddaughter, who’s only 10 months old, needed a new liver. She’d had a transplant the week before that hadn’t worked! She had days to live. I’d been going through assessment to see if I was a match and was healthy enough to donate. I was a match and in the best shape ever. So three weeks ago, I donated 20% of my liver to my granddaughter. We are both doing well. My granddaughter is still in intensive care. It’s a long recovery for her, but she’s doing really well.”
Her words remind us why weight loss and fitness in our 50s is about so much more than appearance. Because Debra had lost weight, built strength, and transformed her health, she was physically able to undergo major surgery and save her granddaughter’s life.
She says:
“These workouts really are life-saving, not only for myself but for my granddaughter too. Keep up the great work, everyone. I’ve started just gentle exercise again; it’s a twelve-week recovery. I’ll get back to where I was soon. One day at a time”
This is where the message becomes so clear: fitness after 50 isn’t just about living longer, it’s about living stronger, ready for the moments that matter most.
Recovery, Resilience, and the Power of Healthy Living
After the transplant, both Debra and Phoebe faced long recoveries. But the resilience that Debra had built through her fitness journey carried her through.
She returned to gentle workouts, proving that weight loss and fitness after 50 are not about quick fixes but about creating a lifestyle that supports health and recovery through every stage of life.
Fitness gave Debra her vitality back, and it gave her the strength to keep moving forward. That’s the real gift of staying fit after 50, it builds resilience, both physically and emotionally, for life’s hardest battles.
A New Chapter: Thriving at 60
Not long ago, Debra reached out again with an update that filled us with joy. She shared:
“A few years ago I messaged you about me donating part of my liver to my then 10-month-old granddaughter. Your videos had got me into the best shape possible in order to donate at the age of56;, I thought you might like an update. I’m now 60 and Phoebe is nearly 5 and will be starting school in September. We have just completed a sponsored walk of 5km up a very large hill 200m high. As you can see we are both doing really well. Keep doing your amazing videos; you are helping people in so many different ways. Well done and thank you.”
From losing weight and regaining her fitness at 56, to walking up hills with her granddaughter at 60, Debra’s journey shows what’s possible when women over 50 commit to health and longevity.
This is what staying fit after 50 looks like, not slowing down, but gaining more strength and more life.
Why Weight Loss and Fitness Matter After 50
Debra’s story is powerful because it proves that weight loss after 50 isn’t about vanity—it’s about survival, strength, and the ability to live fully. For women in midlife, the benefits of fitness are enormous:
- Weight loss supports longevity: maintaining a healthy weight reduces risks of heart disease, diabetes, and joint pain.
- Strength supports resilience: strong muscles protect bones, improve balance, and help you bounce back faster from surgery or illness.
- Healthy living at 50 and beyond means freedom: the freedom to move with energy, to join your grandchildren in play, and to keep saying “yes” to new adventures.
The Fabulous50s workouts are designed with these exact goals in mind. They’re not about punishing routines or extreme diets. They’re about simple, effective, low-impact exercise that helps women over 50 lose weight, feel strong, and enjoy life to the fullest.
Final Thoughts
Debra and Phoebe’s story is one of strength, resilience, and love. It’s about a grandmother who refused to let age or circumstance define what she was capable of. It’s about how small daily steps, such as simple workouts, consistent effort, and a choice to move, can prepare you for life’s greatest challenges.
At age 56, Debra lost weight, got stronger, and changed her body. Now that she’s 60, she walks 5 km up hills with Phoebe by her side. Their story shows that getting fit after 50 is not only possible, but also powerful. It’s not just about looking better; it’s about living better, longer, and stronger.
Their story is a gift to all of us, reminding us why taking care of our bodies is never selfish; it’s an act of love for ourselves and for those who need us.
