Going on a solo trip is a life-changing experience for women over 50.

It’s a one-of-a-kind chance to see new places, meet new people, and learn more about yourself via solo travel.

If you’ve never planned a solo trip before, and you already feel stressed, don’t panic! With the right planning and mindset, solo travel can be incredibly rewarding and enriching.

In recent months, I have gone on some solo trips and I would like to share some tips with you.

Why Solo Trips are Perfect for Women Over 50

How to Plan a Solo Trip as a Woman Over 50

When you travel by yourself, you have the chance to get out of your comfort zone and experience new cultures and things.

As a woman over 50, you have a lot of experience, patience, and financial security, which makes you perfect for the fun of exploring on your own.

One of the most significant benefits of solo travel is personal growth. Going through new places by yourself makes you more independent and boosts your confidence.

You can fully immerse yourself in activities and destinations that match your interests when you have complete control over your itinerary.

Solo travel offers a unique opportunity to connect with diverse people and grow personally. Locals can teach you about their culture and travelers can become lifelong friends.

A solo trip helps you discover new interests or rekindle old ones.

Step-by-Step Guide on Planning a Solo Trip

1. Decide where to go

A successful solo trip depends on picking the right place to go. Take things like safety, ease of access, and your own interests into account.

Here are some of the top destinations that cater to solo female travelers over 50:

2. Research and preparation

How to Plan a Solo Trip as a Woman Over 50

A successful solo adventure starts with a lot of research. When you use a mix of travel blogs, forums, and guidebooks, you can learn a lot about the place you want to visit.

Safety should always come first. Reading travel advisories and accounts from other solo travelers can teach you a lot about possible risks and how to avoid them.

Knowing and respecting the local rules and customs is also very important. Knowing about cultural differences makes traveling more enjoyable and helps you build respect and real relationships with the people you meet.

It is also important to know how the weather will be at your destination so you can pack correctly and make the best use of your time.

You can have the most fun and be most comfortable on your solo trip by planning your activities around the weather.

3. Determine your budget

Establishing a clear budget is crucial for planning a successful solo trip.

First, consider the total amount you’re willing to allocate for the entire journey. This includes everything from flights and accommodations to food, activities, and souvenirs.

Once you have a total figure in mind, it’s time to prioritize your spending.

Are you someone who values culinary experiences and is willing to splurge on dining? Or perhaps you prioritize unique accommodations and are happy to opt for budget-friendly meals?

Maybe you’re more interested in immersing yourself in local culture through activities and experiences and are willing to cut back on shopping.

Understanding your spending priorities will help you make informed decisions about your destination, accommodations, and activities.

4. Book your accommodation

Book your accommodation

For a pleasant solo travel experience, it is important to choose accommodations that put safety and comfort first.

Hotels are often a safe and convenient place to stay, especially ones with good reviews and good locations.

When traveling on a budget, hostels can be a good option. Many of them have private rooms so you can be alone.

Platforms like Airbnb also offer a wide range of vacation rentals, so travelers can find accommodations that fit their needs and preferences.

5. Create your itinerary

Having a flexible schedule is important for getting the most out of your solo travel and avoiding the stress of feeling rushed.

Making an initial list of the most important sights and things to do is a good way to start planning. Then add chances to experience things that are unique to the area, like cultural events, markets, and chance meetings. This will give your solo trip more depth and authenticity.

At the same time, it is important to have set aside time to relax, rest, and explore on your own.

As you finalize some of these opportunities that you need to book ahead of time, the best way to make a plan for your day is to make a list of one to two concrete things.

Then, give yourself time to wander or do the things on your “if there is time” lists every day.

This way of planning helps make an itinerary that is fun, not too busy, and leaves room for the unexpected.

6. Don’t forget to sign up for group tours

sign up for group tours

When I travel by myself, I love going on fun tours with a group.

This is a fun way to meet new people, have fun, and talk to a local guide.

You can go on a food and drink walking tour, a cooking class, a bike tour, a day trip, or something else.

7. Plan your transportation

Getting from the airport to your hotel can be one of the scariest parts of traveling alone.

It can be overwhelming to feel lost in a place you are not familiar with. It is important to plan your arrival ahead of time to avoid this stress.

Researching your transportation options before departure is key.

An easy and cheap way to start your trip is to take one of the many trains or buses that run between airports and city centers.

If you’ve booked a vacation rental, do not be shy about asking the host for advice on how to get to your place.

You will feel more confident and ready for your upcoming solo trip if you have a clear plan.

If you prefer a rideshare or taxi, find out how the system works at the airport or train station.

Different places have slightly different ways of doing things. You will feel a lot more comfortable starting your trip by yourself if you know exactly where and how you are going to get there.

8. Download essential solo travel apps

When you travel alone, having the right technology can make your trip a lot better. Before you go on your trip, make sure you have these important apps downloaded so you can easily find your way, connect with others, and handle your money.

Google Maps is a must-have app for getting around new cities. It has features that let you save interesting places, find the best routes, and get to maps even when you do not have internet access.

With Bumble’s BFF feature, people looking for friends can meet other travelers. Make new friends and make memories with people who share your interests.

My Currency Converter is a must-have if you want to avoid nasty financial surprises. You can quickly convert currencies to know how much your money is worth and make smart choices about what to spend it on.

Finally, Google Translate can be a lifesaver when navigating language barriers. Get past problems with communication and feel comfortable blending in with the local culture.

If you download these apps, you will be ready for anything that might happen on your solo trip.

9. Get a travel insurance

Get your travel insurannce

Travel insurance is an essential component of any solo trip. It provides a crucial safety net in case of unforeseen circumstances.

There are primarily two types of insurance to consider: health insurance and personal articles insurance.

When traveling abroad, you must have full coverage health insurance. It covers medical bills, evacuations, and other emergencies that happen because of health issues.

From my own experience, I know how important this coverage is. I strongly suggest that you look into options such as Trawick International or the less expensive SafetyWing.

Don’t forget to get personal articles insurance, protecting your belongings is equally important.

A lot of people forget that their renter’s or homeowner’s insurance may cover their personal belongings while they are traveling.

You should talk to your current insurance provider before buying more insurance.

10. Pack light, travel free

Traveling light is a game-changer, especially for solo travelers. With fewer belongings to manage, you’ll enjoy greater freedom and mobility.

For shorter trips, you can even just bring a carry-on suitcase. A lot of experienced travelers have been able to survive for long periods of time with just one suitcase.

Two essential items for any solo traveler are an anti-theft cross-body purse and a portable power bank

You can stay connected and safe while exploring new places with these small accessories that offer both security and convenience.

11. Learn basic local phrases

Learning basic phrases in the local language is a fantastic way to enhance your solo travel experience.

It shows respect for the culture of the area and can lead to interactions you did not expect.

You should learn some important phrases to start with, like hello, ask for something simple, and get directions.

Learning numbers can also help you when you are bargaining or ordering food.

12. Stay connected with your loved ones

plan a solo trip. Stay connected with families.

Before going on a solo trip, it is normal to feel both excited and scared.

It is important to reassure your family and friends that you are safe and healthy. Setting up a regular plan for communication is very important.

Regular check-ins via text or WhatsApp can provide peace of mind for both you and your family.

Sharing your itinerary with a trusted friend or family member is an added safety measure. This allows them to track your whereabouts and contact you if necessary.
