The Ordinary Anti-Aging Skincare Routine for Mature Skin Over 50

I’m going to let you in on something that completely changed the way I think about skincare. For years, I bought the most expensive creams, serums, and treatments I could find, convinced that a higher price tag meant better results.

Then I switched to using The Ordinary exclusively, and after seven months of testing, I can honestly tell you: my skin looked just as good as it did when I was spending ten times more.

The Ordinary is one of the most affordable skincare ranges on the market, and it’s also one of the most confusing. There are so many products that it’s tempting to grab as many as you can and layer them all on at once. I tried that. It doesn’t work. It hurts your skin, it makes your skin angry, and it doesn’t do any good.

So I had The Ordinary create a simplified routine specifically for my concerns: dry skin, wrinkles, and dullness. These are the three things most of us are dealing with after 50.

Today, I’m sharing that exact routine with you, step by step, morning and evening. This is The Ordinary skincare routine for mature skin that genuinely works, and it proves you don’t need to spend a fortune to get beautiful, glowing skin.

What Does Mature Skin Actually Need?

Before we get into the products, let’s talk about what our skin is asking for at this stage. After 50, oestrogen levels drop, collagen production slows down, and our skin’s natural barrier doesn’t hold moisture the way it used to.

The result is dryness, fine lines, wrinkles, and a dull, tired complexion. Research shows that women can lose up to 30 percent of their skin collagen in the first five years after menopause, with an ongoing decline of about 2 percent each year after that.

That means we need three things from our skincare: an anti-aging element to support collagen and reduce wrinkles, hydration to plump the skin and lock in moisture, and brightening to bring back that glow. Those three pillars are the foundation of The Ordinary skincare routine for mature skin, and everything I’m about to walk you through addresses at least one of them.

What Is the Morning Skincare Routine?

Your morning anti-aging skincare for women over 50 stays the same every single day, which makes it easy to build into a habit. After cleansing, you’re going to layer four products, one at a time, letting each one dry before applying the next.

Step 1: Buffet + Copper Peptides 1%

This is your daily collagen builder. The Buffet serum is designed to target multiple signs of ageing at once, including fine lines, wrinkles, and dullness. The copper peptides help stimulate protein production in the skin, giving you that plump, healthy look. Use this every morning, seven days a week. Apply it to clean skin and let it dry before moving to the next step.

$24.64

Step 2: Matrixyl 10% + HA

Matrixyl is a heavy-duty peptide that specifically addresses the deeper wrinkles we already have, not just preventing new ones. While Buffet is your general maintenance, Matrixyl is the targeted repair. Together, these two peptide serums give your skin a powerful anti-aging foundation. Always apply Buffet first, then Matrixyl.

Step 3: Amino Acids + B5

This is your hydration step. After two layers of peptides, your skin needs moisture, and this product delivers it beautifully. It fills your skin up, plumps it, and gives it that dewy, healthy feel. You’ll use this product in both your morning and evening routines because hydration is something mature skin needs constantly.

Step 4: Ascorbyl Tetraisopalmitate Solution 20% in Vitamin F

This is your vitamin C, and it’s the brightening element of the routine. This particular formula is oil-soluble, which means it layers well on top of the previous water-based serums. Vitamin C is a powerful antioxidant that protects your skin from environmental damage while making it look more alive and radiant. One important note: do not use the pure L-ascorbic acid powder with Buffet, as they’re not compatible. This oil-soluble version is the right choice for this routine.

Finish with your moisturiser to lock everything in, and if you’re going outside, always follow with sunscreen.

What Is the Evening Skincare Routine?

This is where The Ordinary skincare routine for mature skin gets a little more involved, but it’s still very manageable once you understand the structure.

We’re going to split the week into two alternating protocols: A days and B days. The reason for this is simple. Certain ingredients, like glycolic acid and retinoids, should never be used on the same night because they can irritate your skin when combined.

A Days (Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday): Exfoliation + Hydration

On your A days, you’re going to cleanse and then apply the Glycolic Acid 7% Toning Solution. This is your exfoliant. It strips away dead skin cells, revealing the fresh, brighter skin underneath.

Glycolic acid is the gold standard for anti-aging exfoliation, and interestingly, when I visited my dermatologist, his prescription product was essentially the same ingredient at 8 percent.

You can get almost the identical benefit from The Ordinary without a prescription and at a fraction of the cost. If you have sensitive skin, start by using it just once a week until your skin adjusts. A slight tingle is normal and means it’s working.

After the glycolic acid, apply your Amino Acids + B5 for hydration, then finish with moisturiser. That’s it. Two products and your moisturiser on A nights.

B Days (Monday, Wednesday, Friday, Sunday): Peptides + Retinoid

On your B days, you’re going to layer four products. Start with Matrixyl 10% + HA for your peptide boost, then Amino Acids + B5 for moisture, followed by Granactive Retinoid 5% in Squalane.

This retinoid is what The Ordinary recommends as their best anti-aging option. It increases collagen production and helps your skin renew itself overnight, and it’s designed to be less irritating than traditional retinol.

If this particular product is out of stock, you can substitute the Retinol 1% in Squalane, though it may be slightly more irritating. Finish with your moisturiser to seal everything in.

Do You Really Need Expensive Skincare After 50?

This is the question I wanted to answer when I started this experiment, and after seven months of using nothing but The Ordinary products for aging skin, I can tell you clearly: no, you do not.

My skin was just as hydrated, just as smooth, and just as bright as it was when I was spending significantly more. Marketing is incredibly powerful.

When a product costs $100 or more, we convince ourselves it must be doing something extraordinary. Sometimes it is. Often, the active ingredients are the same ones you can find in a $10 bottle from The Ordinary.

That said, I do enjoy using luxury products too, and there’s nothing wrong with that if it makes you happy. The point is that beautiful, well-cared-for skin doesn’t have to come with a big price tag. This affordable skincare routine over 50 delivers real results, and it’s accessible to everyone.

How Can You Stay Organised With So Many Products?

I’ll share a little trick that helps me every day. I take small pieces of masking tape and stick them on each bottle. My morning products get a blue label with the number order (1, 2, 3, 4), and my evening products get a red label.

That way, I can glance at my cabinet and immediately know which products to reach for and in what order. It takes two minutes to set up and saves you from any confusion, especially on those mornings when your brain hasn’t quite woken up yet.

Final Thoughts

Taking care of our skin after 50 doesn’t need to be complicated or expensive. With the right products layered in the right order, we can give our mature skin exactly what it needs: collagen support, deep hydration, gentle exfoliation, and a bright, healthy glow.

This Ordinary skincare routine for mature skin has been a genuine revelation for me, and I hope it gives you the confidence to simplify your own routine and love the skin you’re in.

Remember, consistency is everything. Put your products on every morning and every evening, follow the A day and B day schedule, and give it time. Your skin will thank you.

FAQs

Can The Ordinary products really replace expensive skincare?

Yes. After seven months of exclusive use, my skin showed results comparable to high-end products. The active ingredients in The Ordinary are the same ones found in premium skincare, just without the luxury marketing markup.

What are the three key things mature skin needs?

Anti-aging support (peptides and retinoids to rebuild collagen), hydration (to plump and moisturise), and brightening (vitamin C and exfoliation to restore radiance).

Can I use glycolic acid and retinol on the same night?

No. Glycolic acid and retinoids should never be used together because the combination can irritate and damage your skin. That is why this routine alternates between A days (glycolic acid) and B days (retinoid).

What if my skin is sensitive to glycolic acid?

Start by using it just once a week and gradually increase as your skin adjusts. A slight tingle is normal, but if you experience redness or burning, reduce frequency or switch to a gentler exfoliant.

Can I mix the pure vitamin C powder with Buffet?

No. L-ascorbic acid (the pure powder form of vitamin C) is not compatible with the Buffet serum. Use the oil-soluble vitamin C formula instead, which layers safely over peptides.

How long does it take to see results from this routine?

Most people notice improved hydration and brightness within the first few weeks. Visible improvements in fine lines and wrinkles typically take three to six months of consistent use.

Do I need to use sunscreen with this routine?

Absolutely. Sunscreen is essential every morning, regardless of the weather. Glycolic acid and retinoids both make your skin more sensitive to UV damage, so daily broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher is a must.

  1. Just finished watching your new video on the am & pm ordinary products. I believe you stated a listing or printout of the routine is on your website. I found your website (1st time in) but I don’t see where the list is. Can you please advise?

    Thank you,

  2. Hi I was wondering do you need to do this twice per day or is once a day sufficient?
Also where do you buy these products? Are they online?

  3. You absolutely do have beautiful skin & as you have said on a previous video you have had botox & or other fillers done. Nothing wrong with that but not everyone can afford such treatments.

  4. Hi Schellea. I must admit I never heard about The Ordinary. Today I am using a regimen with IOMA (French brand) which is quite a simple day/night with serum, eye, neck and hydration products. It feels nice on me, but not sure it is making any special effect. I just turned 50, and I am generally blessed having inherited my mom´s skin (she still has beautiful complexion even in her mid 70s), so for example I have quite few wrinkles in general. Now, I am considering if I should give the Ordinary a try. Also, do you think your regimen would be good in general over 50, or should I try to see what products would better work for my type of skin ? I have a generally mixed-type of skin, a little oily on the `T-area´ and also really dry on the cheeks. Thanks for any advice you may share with me.
On a different note, back to my IF and workout adventure started last January which I shared also on your FB community. I just hit the -25Kg milestone, and just miss 2Kg to my final target. After not exercising for 20 years, I have now been super loyal to your workouts for the last 3 months, exercising from 45 to 75 mins per day ´every single day´. I created now my own playlists for each day of the week and I wake up happy every day knowing I will get more fabulous starting the day exercising with you. Thanks for helping me change my life and health focus.

  5. I cannot find the printout either. You say on under the blog. Not sure where that is?? On the website or in FB?
