As the end of the year approaches, I find comfort in thinking about what should be a part of my life and what is holding me back. This careful reflection shows me that I need to get rid of the things that are not helping me anymore.

Every year, I find a few things I have been holding on to for way too long, like shadows that stay even when the sun goes down. Nevertheless, letting go is a complicated process. It is possible to get so used to carrying heavy things that we forget how good it feels to let go of them.

But, as I let go of these burdens, a chain reaction of good changes happens in my life, from better sleep to heartier laughter. My spirit is freed. That feeling of relief—taking back control over the parts of my life that may have been dragging me down without my knowledge—is wonderfully satisfying.

So today, I’ll be sharing the things to leave behind in 2023—a collection of burdens ready to be shed, making room for the boundless potential of the year ahead. Take some time to think about each point on this list and how it applies to your life.

When you let go of things that no longer serve you, you make room for growth, happiness, and satisfaction.

Things to Leave Behind for a Happier You!

1. Lifestyle choices to abandon

Your lifestyle choices have a significant impact on your health and well-being.

It’s time to abandon the habit of neglecting self-care. Self-care isn’t selfish; it’s essential. Take time each day to nurture your mind, body, and spirit.

Leave behind the impulse to always say ‘yes.’ Overcommitting can lead to stress and burnout. Learn to say ‘no’ when necessary and prioritize your time and energy.

Let go of the notion that you’re too old to learn something new. Life is a journey of continuous learning and growth.

Be open to new experiences and opportunities.

2. Habits to leave behind

As a woman over 50, there are certain habits that you should leave behind to lead a healthier and happier life.

Let go of the habit of comparing yourself to others. Your journey is unique, and comparison only leads to dissatisfaction and discontent.

Leave behind the fear of aging. Embrace your age and the wisdom that comes with it. Your age does not define you; your spirit, energy, and attitude do.

Drop the habit of putting off medical checkups. Regular health screenings are critical for early detection and treatment of potential health issues.

Fashion is a form of self-expression, and it’s time to ditch outdated trends that don’t resonate with your style.

Say goodbye to the rule that women over 50 should only wear bland clothes. Wear what makes you feel confident and beautiful.

Leave behind the obsession with trends. Instead, focus on building a timeless wardrobe that reflects your personality.

Stop choosing comfort over style all the time. You can have the best of both worlds with today’s many stylish and comfortable clothing options.

4. Leave behind toxic relationships

Relationships play a significant role in our emotional well-being. It’s crucial to reevaluate your relationships regularly.

Leave behind toxic relationships. Whether it’s a friend, family member, or partner, anyone who brings negativity and stress into your life doesn’t deserve a place in it.

Stop being the giver all the time in your relationships. A healthy relationship is about give and take. Surround yourself with those who uplift and support you, fostering positive and meaningful connections.

Cutting ties with toxic relationships or friendships allows space for new ones to flourish. Enjoy only the company of those who appreciate you for who you are and contribute positively to your life.

Let go of the fear of spending time alone. Self-awareness and personal growth can come from enjoying your own company.

5. Unhealthy eating habits to leave in the past

Your diet plays a critical role in your health. Leave behind the habit of skipping meals. Your body needs regular fuel to function optimally.

Abandon fad diets that promise quick weight loss. Instead, focus on balanced, nutritious eating habits.

Let go of the habit of eating mindlessly. Pay attention to what you’re eating and enjoy every bite.

6. Old exercise routines to update

Just as your body changes with age, so should your exercise routine. First, leave behind exercises that strain your joints. Instead, opt for low-impact workouts like swimming or yoga.

Leave behind the thought that cardio is the only way to work out. Strength training is crucial for maintaining muscle mass and bone density.Let go of the habit of neglecting flexibility and balance exercises. They can help prevent falls and improve your overall mobility.

There are many new workout routines on my YouTube channel to help you get started on your fitness journey in the new year.

7. Old gadgets to replace

Technology is constantly evolving, and it’s important to keep up with the changes. Replace outdated tech gadgets that no longer serve their purpose.

Abandon the habit of hoarding old gadgets. Donate or recycle them responsibly.

Let go of tech gadgets that add to your screen time. Instead, invest in gadgets that enhance your productivity or promote physical activity.

8. Outdated home decor to let go

Your home should reflect your personality and taste. Leave behind outdated decor trends that no longer align with your style.

Abandon the habit of holding onto items for sentimental reasons. Clutter can disrupt the harmony of your space.

Let go of the fear of experimenting with your decor. Your home is your canvas, so feel free to express yourself.

9. Negative mindsets to abandon

Your mindset influences your actions and outlook on life.  Leave behind the mindset of perfectionism. Striving for perfection can lead to unnecessary stress and disappointment.

Abandon the ‘all-or-nothing’ mindset. Life isn’t black and white, and it’s okay to have some grey areas.

Let go of the fear of failure. View failures as opportunities to learn and grow.

10. Bad skincare habits to leave behind

Skincare is an essential part of self-care. Leave behind the habit of sleeping with makeup on. It can lead to clogged pores and breakouts.

Stop forgetting to put on sunscreen. Even on cloudy days, UV rays can cause skin damage.Let go of using outdated or expired skincare products. They can be ineffective and potentially harmful.

11. Career missteps to let go

Career growth requires continuous learning and adapting. Leave behind the fear of asking for help. No one knows everything, and seeking help can lead to growth and improvement.

Stop settling for less all the time. Know your worth and don’t hesitate to negotiate for better pay or working conditions.

Let go of the habit of overworking. Work-life balance is crucial for your physical and mental health.

12. Financial mistakes to leave behind

Financial stability requires careful planning and decision-making. Leave behind the habit of impulsive buying. Plan your purchases and save for your future.

Do not live without a financial plan anymore. Having a clear plan can help you achieve your financial goals.

Let go of the fear of investing. With proper research and consultation, investing can lead to financial growth.

13. Outdated beauty products to replace

Your beauty routine should evolve with your skin’s changing needs. Leave behind outdated beauty products that no longer suit your skin.

Stop using things that have passed their expiration date. They can lead to skin irritations and infections.

Let go of the habit of neglecting your beauty tools. Regularly clean and replace your brushes and sponges to maintain good hygiene.

14. Health misconceptions to abandon

Misconceptions can lead to unhealthy habits. Leave behind the misconception that aging equals declining health. With a healthy lifestyle, you can enjoy good health at any age.

Break the false belief that it is too late to quit bad habits. It’s never too late to make positive changes in your life.

Let go of the misconception that mental health isn’t as important as physical health. Mental and physical health are equally important and interconnected.

15. Ineffective time management habits to let go

Time management is crucial for productivity and stress management. Leave behind the habit of multitasking. It can lead to errors and decreased productivity.

Give up the habit of putting things off. Prioritize your tasks and tackle them head-on.

Let go of the habit of neglecting breaks. Regular breaks can boost your productivity and creativity.

16. Travel mistakes to stop making

If you love to travel, there are a few habits you should leave behind. Leave behind the habit of overpacking. Pack light to make your travels more comfortable.

Always research your destination before traveling. Knowing about local customs and regulations can enhance your travel experience. Let go of the fear of traveling alone. Solo travel can be a rewarding and empowering experience.

17. Social Media habits to leave behind

Social media can be a double-edged sword. Leave behind the habit of comparing your life with others on social media. Remember, social media often shows a filtered version of reality.

Quit the habit of spending too much time on social media. Limit your screen time for better mental health.

Let go of the habit of sharing too much personal information online. Protect your privacy and security.

18. Movies and TV shows to stop bingeing

While movies and TV shows can be a great source of entertainment, it’s important to consume them mindfully.

Leave behind the habit of binge-watching. It can lead to sedentary behavior and disrupt your sleep.

Don’t watch movies or shows that bring negativity or stress. Choose content that uplifts you and adds value to your life. Let go of the habit of eating unhealthy snacks while watching. Choose healthier alternatives to keep your diet on track.

19. Leave behind the pursuit of perfection

Trying to be perfect is an impossible goal that will only make you unhappy and stressed. Leave behind the unrealistic standards of perfection that society has set.

Accept the flaws that make you who you are; they are what make you authentic. Strive to be the best version of yourself instead of trying to be perfect. Love and accept yourself.

Pursuing perfection will only make you unhappy and rob you of happiness. Accept that your flaws are beautiful, and enjoy the process of learning more about yourself that comes with getting older.

20. Shed some clutter

Free yourself from the clutter in your home, calendar, and mind. It’s burdensome. If you’re unsure where to begin, check out my list of 100 things to declutter.

Getting rid of what you do not need will make you feel lighter. When it gets hard to hold on to things, remember how hard it was to take care of them—to store, clean, and think about how useless they are.

Clutter steals your space, time, and energy. If it doesn’t contribute positively to your life, you won’t miss it when it’s gone.

Closing Thoughts

As you reflect on these things to leave behind, refrain from adding another burden to your plate, such as judgment.

Rather than scolding yourself for holding onto these things for an extended period or for acquiring them in the first place, celebrate yourself.

Being ready for change is a feat in itself. Take a deep breath, show yourself compassion, and remember that growth and positive changes are important steps along the way.

Welcome new experiences and opportunities; stride forward with confidence, self-love and a renewed sense of purpose.

Here’s to a fulfilling and prosperous 2024!
