Brain Training After 50

The Fabulous50s Guide to a Sharper Mind

Brain Training is one of the three Supporting Elements that hold up your Movement. A sharp mind keeps a strong body moving.

Caring for your brain is just as important as caring for your body. Explore brain training tips, expert-backed resources and fun games that help you improve your focus and mental agility so you can stay independent, confident and in control.
The Five Pillars of Longevity

The Fabulous50s Longevity Protocol™

Your five-pillar blueprint for living stronger, healthier, and longer

The Fabulous50s Longevity Protocol™ begins with Movement. Ten minutes a day is our MVP, the minimum that keeps you young. Those ten minutes cover the Fabulous50s Five Pillars of Longevity™: strength, cardio, balance, power and mobility.

Three Supporting Elements hold that movement up. Nutrition brings the protein, fibre, minerals, carbohydrates and fats that keep your muscle, bone and energy strong. Recovery is your sleep, your meditation, your community and your kindness towards yourself. Brain Training is five focused, repeatable games that keep your mind sharp.

Together, they are the complete picture of health after 50.

If you have ever thought, “I feel like I’m starting again, and I don’t know where to start,” you’re in exactly the right place.

What Does Brain Training Really Mean After 50?

Your brain needs training just like your body does. And after 50, keeping it sharp is not about doing more. It is about doing the right things, repeatedly.

A little brain work is built into every workout

As a Neuro Athletics Coach, I build mental challenges right into the movement itself. When you follow along with your ten minutes, your brain is being trained alongside your body. The two are far more connected than most people realise, and training them together is one of the most powerful things you can do as you age.

Five games. Not hundreds.

Here is where we do something different from everyone else. The problem with life today is not that we do too little. It is that we take in too much: endless information, endless apps, endless new things to try, and we end up scattered, mastering nothing.

So inside the app we do the opposite. We do not offer you hundreds of games to get lost in. We give you five brain games, each one designed to activate a different part of the brain. And you practise those same five, over and over.

That repetition is the point. When you focus on five things and truly build them, you get sharper. When you scatter across a hundred, you get nowhere. Five games, practised well, train your memory, your focus and your reactions in a way that actually lasts.

And that is the thread running through this entire guide. We do not ask you to do everything. We ask you to do a few of the right things, well, and keep doing them. That is what turns effort into results, and results into a way of life.

Who is Schellea Fowler?

Schellea Fowler is a Certified Personal Trainer and Neuro Athletics Coach specializing in exercise for older adults and the creator of The Fabulous50s Longevity Protocol™.

She built the Protocol out of her own decade of living through menopause, an osteoporosis diagnosis, and the body changes that come with age, after finding no program that actually fit this stage of life. Her approach flips the script most women are handed: instead of focusing on what they are losing, chiefly weight, she trains women to gain. Gain back bone, muscle, fitness, mobility, balance, and confidence. It is a five-pillar training system that slots easily into the average woman’s week, with a longevity test for each pillar so you can see where you are strong, where you are weak, train for it, and retest. Following her own diagnosis, Schellea did exactly that, rebuilding bone density, strength, and mobility and lowering key biological age markers.

Today, through Fabulous50s, she has helped millions of women across the world build strength, mobility, and confidence, evidenced by tens of thousands of comments from women who have done the training and seen the results.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is brain fog after 50 normal?

Yes, and it is far more common than most of us realize. Declining estrogen during perimenopause and menopause affects memory, focus, and word-finding, so names on the tip of the tongue and lost trains of thought are typical. Normal fog tends to be mild and improves when sleep, stress, and blood sugar are supported. If memory changes start interfering with daily life or safety, a chat with your doctor brings peace of mind.

How does brain training support the five Core Longevity Pillars?

Brain Training is one of the four Supporting Elements of the Fabulous50s Longevity Protocol, and it keeps the whole system talking to itself. A sharp mind reacts faster, which protects our Balance. Focus and coordination power our Strength and Power work. When we pair movement with mental challenge, the way our dual-task workouts do, the brain and body train each other.

What is the Fabulous50s Longevity Protocol™?

The Fabulous50s Longevity Protocol™ is Schellea’s exercise-prescribed methodology for healthy ageing, built around the Fabulous50s Five Pillars of Longevity™: Strength, Cardio, Mobility, Balance, and Power. Together, these forms of movement help women stay strong, capable, confident, and independent as they age. Around the five pillars sit four supporting elements that make the protocol sustainable: Nutrition, Brain Training, Recovery, and Community. You can start with just 10 minutes a day, with the exact daily structure inside the Fabulous50s Vitality App.

Do puzzles really keep our minds sharp?

Puzzles like sudoku and word searches exercise attention, pattern recognition, and working memory, and they build confidence with every solve. The honest science is that puzzles work best as part of a bigger mix. Our brains grow most when we combine mental challenge with movement, good sleep, social connection, and learning new things. Think of puzzles as one delicious ingredient, not the whole recipe.

What is the best exercise for brain health after 50?

Our metabolism shifts as estrogen declines and muscle naturally decreases, so the eating patterns that worked at 40 stop working the same way. This is biology, not failure. Small changes, like more protein at breakfast and fewer ultra-processed foods, help our bodies respond again.

How long does it take to notice a sharper mind?

Some benefits arrive quickly, since a single walk can improve focus for hours afterward. Deeper changes take consistency. Research on regular walking shows measurable memory and attention improvements within weeks to months. Ten minutes a day, done most days, beats an occasional marathon session every time.

Can we prevent dementia with brain training?

No single activity can promise prevention, and anyone claiming otherwise is selling something. What research does show is that an active mind, regular movement, good sleep, social connection, and heart-healthy habits build cognitive reserve, our brain’s buffer against aging. Every healthy choice stacks the odds in our favor, and it is never too late to start stacking.

Where do we start if our mind feels foggy right now?

Start small and start kind. Choose one thing today: a ten-minute walk, an earlier night, a puzzle with your morning tea, or a phone call with a friend. Each one gives your brain something to work with. Inside the Fabulous50s Vitality App, our daily sessions combine movement and brain training for you, so showing up is the only decision you need to make.
